Instructor Bios
I, Kerfala “Fana” Bangoura, was named “Master Drummer” by the Guinean Ministry of Culture in 2008. I performed as a soloist for the national groups of Guinea, including Percussions de Guinee and Les Ballets Africains for over 8 years. I also served as Percussion Director for Fareta, a ballet company founded by Karim Keita over 9 years. My co-workers and students have said the following about me: "Fana has a wonderfully expressive style and the ability to demonstrate power and stamina while maintaining the lyrical beauty of his instrument. He is internationally recognized for his abilities as an outstanding artist and patient, knowledgeable instructor." Watch a brief clip of me at Willamette University this summer: http://www.project2 059.com/video/ 3497275:Video: 4833
Deidre Schuetz has studied Guinean, Senegalese, and Malian dance since 1998. I have been a witness to her training with some of Guinea's strongest instructors over 3 years IN GUINEA. She has trained with, performed with, and participated in traditional ceremonies in both Guinea (Kissidougou, Kankan, Sigueri, N'Zerekore, Conakry) and Senegal (Dakar). Since 2003, she has taught university, adult, and children classes in the U.S. (Oregon, Washington, California, and South Carolina). She articulates movements, discusses the differences between traditional and modern movements, differentiates masculine and feminine styles, and recounts history behind the dance.
Please contact me with any questions or feedback. I hope to see you there!
Smiles,
Fana
