Our mission, Values & Goals The Harambee Centre connects the people of the Pacific Northwest with the people and cultures of Africa. Harambee means "Let's pull together" in Kiswahili; our logo is the Ashanti adinkra for strength. The mission of the Harambee Centre is to pull people together for the good of the global community. We believe that multicultural education and intercultural exchange are essential to building genuine understanding, respect and enduring relationships among diverse peoples. As members of the global community, we are committed to sharing both material and cultural wealth. The Harambee Centre's goals are threefold: to inform, educate, and enlighten people of our community about the cultures and realities of the vast and varied societies of Africa; to build bonds of understanding, respect, and mutually beneficial relationships between people in the Pacific Northwest and people in Africa; and to support self-help projects in African communities by generating funds from resources in our communities. We value collaboration and work to coordinate activities with other groups that share and/or complement our mission. We promote diversity and welcome broad participation in our programs. The Harambee Center is an Oregon
not for profit organization and received its 501(c)(3) tax status in August
2001. |
